Decision to abandon recycling centre confirmed
Plans to build the centre on land at Greystones were first rejected by the council’s cabinet last month Wednesday (July 17), the council’s Finance and Management Overview and Scrutiny Committee decided not to ask the cabinet to review the decision.
Instead it urged members to “explore alternative solutions for the provision of recycling facilities to the north of the district without unacceptable financial risk to the authority”.
The council hoped to convert the disused council depot at Greystones, partly to replace recycling facilities lost when Dean Pit was closed by Oxfordshire County Council in 2011 to cut costs.
The project was delayed for months by a dispute between WODC and Chipping Norton Council which demanded a lease payment for a strip of its land at the entry to the site.
Cabinet members then decided a fall in the cost of recycling material meant the centre, originally expected to turn an annual profit of £742,000 would run at a loss of £43,000 a year.
Members voted to scrap the plan, “with regret”, and to reconsider the future use of the site.
